Many of us have been praying, considering and discussing the matter of the new incumbent appointment and, now we are at the ‘advertising the post’ stage, we are really starting to think – ‘Who might we get?’ I have been in several prayer meetings when I, and others, have prayed earnestly for this person to clearly know God’s call, and to be ready to lead us at St Mary’s. I have prayed for their circumstances, situation and guidance, so they are fully prepared and equipped to take up this important role. But I realised that, as much as I (rightly) pray for that person to be ready, obedient and sensitive to God’s call, perhaps I should be praying for me to be equally ready, prepared and obedient so that when a new person is appointed, I will be at the place God wants me to be! So, come on church: let’s also pray for ourselves during this interregnum, that God would teach, prepare, challenge and position us in such a way, that we are ready and in a right place before God, walking in the ways he desires and honouring him in every part of our lives. (Ephesians 2 v 22) Perhaps that would make the new incumbents’ job a lot easier….?!
